Queenslander Weigh, who stands 6'6" (198 cm) tall and weighs 105 kg (231 lb), is primarily a Small forward although he can play both Power forward and Shooting guard. He attended the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) under his Adelaide 36ers coach Marty Clarke until 2006 before moving off to the University of Utah where he played 40 games with the Utah Utes men's basketball team between 2006 and 2008. Weigh averaged 4.8 points, 1.6 rebounds and 0.7 assists for the Utes.[1]

Career

Perth Wildcats

After finishing with the Utes in 2008 Stephen Weigh returned to Australia where he signed with then four time NBL champions the Perth Wildcats. Weigh became a valuable member of a quality Wildcats team which included players such as 7'0" (213 cm) centre Paul Rogers and club captain and MVP Shawn Redhage. In just his second season in the NBL Weigh was part of the Wildcats record 5th Championship when they defeated the Wollongong Hawks two games to one in the 2009-10 NBL Grand Final.

Weigh continued to play for the Wildcats in the 2010-11 NBL season but the Wildcats could not overcome late season injuries including losing Redhage to a near-career ending hip injury and only managed to finish 4th in defense of their title, losing a close fought Semi-final series 1-2 to eventual champion the New Zealand Breakers. Overall Stephen Weigh played 94 games for the Perth Wildcats and in his last season averaged 11 points and 5 rebounds per games.

Adelaide 36ers

Stephen Weigh was a free agent after 2010-11 and on 23 May 2011 it was announced that he had signed a 2 year deal to play with the Adelaide 36ers starting in the 2011-12 NBL season.[2] The early rounds of the season saw Weigh easily leading the league in minutes played averaging over 33 minutes per game.

As of 30 December 2011 Stephen Weigh has played 14 games for the Adelaide 36ers and is averaging 12 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 32.3 minutes per game. In his NBL career he has played 108 games and is averaging 9.4 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 22.8 minutes per game.[3]

International career

While attending the AIS Stephen Weigh won the prestigious Bob Staunton medal for the best player at the National under 20 Championship in 2005 and was touted as a future Aussie Boomer. On 15 July 2011 it was announced that Weigh had been added to the Boomers training squad competing for a spot on the team in the lead up to the 2012 Olympics in London.[4]
